President Bush and Prime Minister Fukuda Meet in Toyako
July 7 - President George W. Bush met with Prime Minister of Japan Yasuo Fukuda on July 6 in Toyako, Japan. After the meeting, they participated in a joint press availability, during which President Bush thanked him for his hospitality and agreed that they had had very important and fruitful discussions on a variety of subjects. On denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, President Bush said, "I view this process as a multi-step process that requires strong verification."

U.S.-Japan Regulatory Reform Initiative
July 7 - The U.S. and Japanese governments announced July 5 the 2008 Report to Leaders summarizing this year's work of the U.S.-Japan Regulatory Reform and Competition Policy Initiative.

Bilateral Investment Initiative Issues Annual Report
July 7 - The U.S.-Japan Investment Initiative, part of the bilateral Economic Partnership for Growth, issued its annual report for 2008 on July 3. Investment's contribution to economic prosperity in both countries makes the Initiative a critical pillar of the bilateral economic relationship. In addition to reviewing recent investment trends in both Japan and the United States, the report summarizes discussions over the past year in the Initiative's Investment Working Group. July 4 is U.S. Independence Day
July 3 - Ambassador J. Thomas Schieffer pronounced in his Independence Day message, "As U.S. Ambassador to Japan, I am delighted to extend Fourth of July greetings to my fellow Americans living and working in Japan and to our Japanese hosts." He expressed gratitude "for our many allies and friends who advance our shared ideals of freedom, justice, and democracy." President Bush also sent his greetings to all Americans in his Independence Day 2008 Presidential Message on July 2. The Embassy will be closed July 4 in observance of this American holiday.

President Bush Discusses 2008 G8 Summit
July 3 - President George W. Bush on July 2 in Washington stated, "Next week I'm going to travel to Japan for the eighth and final G8 summit of my presidency," noting, "At recent summits, G8 countries have made pledges to help developing nations address challenges, from health care to education, to corruption." He emphasized, "Now we need to show the world that the G8 can be accountable for its promises and deliver results." [Full text]

The day before, National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs Dennis Wilder, Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs Dan Price, and Chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality James Connaughton briefed the press on the President's trip to Japan and the G8 Summit. Secretary Rice Attends G8 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kyoto
June 30 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice traveled to Kyoto June 26-28 for the G8 Foreign Ministers' meeting. She made remarks to the traveling press regarding the North Korean declaration June 26. She stated in remarks with Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura on June 27, "We have had a very good discussion of the North Korea issue and affirmed, again, that the next important step is for North Korea to cooperate fully so that we can verify the completeness and the accuracy of the declaration that it has submitted, and so that we can move forward on our ultimate goal, the North’s complete abandonment of its nuclear weapons and its nuclear programs." While in Kyoto, Secretary Rice also participated with her Australian and Japanese counterparts in the Trilateral Strategic Dialogue.

President Bush Discusses North Korea
June 27 - President George W. Bush discussed North Korea on June 26 in the Rose Garden of the White House. President Bush stated, "The policy of the United States is a Korean Peninsula free of all nuclear weapons. This morning, we moved a step closer to that goal, when North Korean officials submitted a declaration of their nuclear programs to the Chinese government as part of the six-party talks." Regarding the abduction issue, the President emphasized, "it is important for the Japanese people to know that the United States will not abandon our strong ally and friend when it comes to helping resolve that issue." The White House also released the following: On the same day, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stated in an Op-Ed in The Wall Street Journal, "We believe that the six-party framework is the best way to learn more about the threat posed by this closed and opaque regime, and ultimately, together with partners, to eliminate North Korea's nuclear weapons and programs." Secretary Rice's Travel to Japan
June 26 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will visit Kyoto June 26-28 to attend the G8 Ministerial to discuss G8 commitments on health, disease prevention, and open markets, as well as prepare for the G8 summit to be held in Lake Toya, Japan in July. While in Kyoto, she will also participate with her Australian and Japanese counterparts in the Trilateral Strategic Dialogue, in which they will discuss global issues and areas of cooperation in East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East.

June 23 - Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Christopher R. Hill visited Japan June 19-20 for consultations with his Japanese and Korean counterparts regarding the six-party talks and denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
