新米国人タスクフォースからの報告書 (12/19/08)

2006年6月のブッシュ大統領の行政命令を受けて国土安全保障省内に設立された「Task Force on New Americans」より、12月18日に報告書が発表されました。米国では毎年平均約90万人の外国人が永住権を取得しています。この報告書では、移民の統合に不可欠とされるアメリカの生活習慣や文化、言語等の理解を促進するために、国や自治体、公共図書館、企業、地域団体等がどのような取り組みを行っているか、また将来への提言を取りまとめています。

女性の所得 (10/23/08)

2008年10月、米労働省労働統計局は、女性の所得に関する報告書を公表しました。報告書によると、2007年の女性の正規雇用給与所得者の週平均給与は、男性の正規雇用給与所得者（766ドル）の約80％の614ドルとのことです。報告書はまた、男女所得の比較を年齢、人種、教育水準、職域、配偶者の有無別にまとめています。

2006年中間選挙に関する統計 (7/2/08)

米商務省国勢調査局は７月１日、2006年の中間選挙における有権者登録率や投票率に関する報告書を公表しました。それによると、2006年には全国で約9600万人が投票しており、2002年に比較して約700万人増加しています。また、投票率は約48%であり、国勢調査局が1994年に調査を開始して以来、最も高い値となっています。

米国渡航のための電子渡航認証システム導入へ (6/5/08)

国土安全保障省（ＤＨＳ）は６月３日、米国への旅行者のための電子渡航認証システム（ESTA）の導入を発表しました。これにより、日本を含むすべてのビザ免除プログラム対象国の旅行者は、ビザなしで商用あるいは観光目的で米国に渡航をする場合、事前にＤＨＳから電子認証を取得することが義務付けられます。ＤＨＳは2008年８月１日からウェブ上で任意の申込受付を開始し、2008年11月中旬までに2009年１月12日からの義務化を発表する予定です。

教育省報告書「説明責任のある国家」 (5/20/08)

米教育省から新しい報告書「A Nation Accountable: Twenty-five Years after A Nation at Risk」が公表されました。これは、1983年の報告書「A Nation at Risk （危機に立つ国家）」から25年間の政府の教育改革を総括するものです。1983年の報告書では、17歳人口の約13%が日常生活に必要な読み書き能力に欠けることや、SAT受験生の成績が下がり続けていること、大学で補習コースが必要な学生が多数いることなどが指摘されました。25年後の今回の報告書では、経済のグローバル化や人口構成の変化に伴い、もっと多くの学生が高等教育レベルで学ぶ必要があるが、現在の教育システムは増大するさまざまな需要に追いついていないことが指摘されています。
